After earning All-Region selection as a senior defensive back for South Florence High School, James didn't receive any major collegiate offers.
College Career
Instead of immediately pursuing a college football career, James enrolled at South Carolina in 2012, but did not try out for the football team. After his freshman year, he attended Florence Darlington Tech in 2013 before making it back to Columbia as a student in 2014 in time for spring drills. After completing spring practice with the Gamecocks, James went on to help out on the scout team during the 2014 season.
