COLUMBIA — South Carolina at last has a starting quarterback.
Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier on Tuesday named redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch as the starter under center for USC’s season opener Sept. 3 against North Carolina in Charlotte.
Mitch had been competing for the job against junior Perry Orth and redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia. The No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart both entering and exiting spring practice, the Raleigh, N.C., native was 2-of-6 passing for 19 yards last season in two brief appearances backing up Dylan Thompson.
In a scrimmage this past Saturday, Mitch completed 5-of-10 attempts for 71 yards with two interceptions.
