Spur of the Moment: Everyone loves the backup QB — until he’s the starter

COLUMBIA — When Perry Orth entered Saturday’s game against Kentucky, a loud cheer rose up from the 82,178 at Williams-Brice Stadium.

In hindsight the reaction seems a bit cruel, given that South Carolina’s change of quarterback was necessitated by a pair of injuries to starter Connor Mitch — an infection of the left hip bruise suffered against North Carolina which would put him in the hospital, and a separated right shoulder which knocked him out of action for at least six week. But after watching USC manage just 161 yards and fall behind 24-7, garnet and black faithful were ready for a change.
