South Carolina Gamecocks fans have longed for a dual-threat quarterback like Dakereon Joyner since the Connor Shaw era. To this day, USC fans fondly recall the scrambling quarterback carving up defenses like Christmas hams. However, two “Cam Newton style” quarterbacks have come and gone from the program since Shaw.
Lorenzo Nunez and Brandon McIlwain fit the bill well enough. Both were highly touted recruits billed as being capable of burning defenses through the air and on the ground. However, the script seemingly flipped 180 degrees when both arrived on campus. Rather than being pranced out as the new faces of the offense, they were placed on the backburner.
