History
The history of the University of Kentucky is a little difficult to follow. Before the Civil War, present-day Transylvania University in Lexington (founded way back in 1780 in a log cabin), a private institution, was called "Kentucky University." In 1865, the state used Morrill Land Grant funds to form the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, which it made a part of "Kentucky University.
