Eight SEC teams earned bids to the 2017 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, the most of any conference this season. The SEC has led or shared the lead of bids 25 times in the 36-year history of the women's NCAA tournament. Until 2004, the SEC was the only conference to ever have eight teams receive NCAA bids. The league has achieved this feat five times, in 1999, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2017. The SEC has sent at least six teams to the NCAA Tournament 27 times.
Tennessee continues its appearance streak, participating in all 36 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championships since its inception in 1982, the only team to do so.
