Sapakoff: Ted Wingard's glory and the 1965 Gamecocks-Citadel game in Charleston

The record-crowd of 20,111 at Johnson Hagood Stadium that Saturday night 50 football seasons ago was almost evenly divided. Not taking political risk, Gov. Robert McNair sat on the Citadel side for the first half and the South Carolina side for the second.

“No one could recall any larger gathering in a single place for any purpose in Charleston,” wrote Warren Koon, The Post and Courier’s Executive Sports Editor.

The 13-3 victory on Sept. 18, 1965, was a good start to a controversial Atlantic Coast Conference season for South Carolina and a missed opportunity for The Citadel.
