Quarterback prospect Jake Bentley commits to Gamecocks

Add another name to South Carolina’s already-crowded quarterback competition — for 2017, at least.

Jake Bentley, a four-star prospect out of Opelika, Ala., and the son of Gamecocks running backs coach Bobby Bentley, committed to USC on Thursday in a Twitter post. Bentley, a prototypical pro-style quarterback at 6-4 and 215 pounds, received dozens of offers after passing for 2,800 yards and 28 touchdowns as a high school junior.

“After many prayers and talks with my family, I have decided that I am coming back home and committing to the University of South Carolina,” Bentley wrote. “I am ready to be a part of the new era of Gamecock football.
