COLUMBIA — Deebo Samuel earned the biggest round of applause in Saturday’s open practice when he leapt between two defenders to catch a touchdown pass thrown by Michael Scarnecchia. But for South Carolina’s young crop of receivers, it was a rare moment of acclaim.
With star Pharoh Cooper sitting out, USC’s freshman and redshirt freshman receivers got plenty of looks in a scrimmage capping Saturday morning’s first session in full pads. And they left head coach Steve Spurrier looking for a little more.
“Somehow our receivers, those freshman kids — they can run it in practice, but you get them out here with a defense on the field, and they go somewhere else and don’t fight for the ball,” Spurrier said.
