COLUMBIA — Perry Orth chatted with head coach Steve Spurrier briefly at practice Wednesday, and South Carolina’s head coach left the quarterback with one message — be ready if your number is called.
“All I can do right now is prepare like I’m starting, and whatever happens, happens,” Orth said.
Connor Mitch will start USC’s opener Sept. 3 against North Carolina in Charlotte, and have the opportunity to keep the job all season. But just because Orth didn’t win the starting job doesn’t mean he won’t be ready to play. Orth and redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia are vying for the backup position, with the former receiving more snaps in practice Wednesday.
