COLUMBIA — Every now and then, Bobby Bentley teases his son Jake by reminding the South Carolina freshman quarterback that he could still be taking it easy in high school.
“He says, ‘Dad, I’m doing the right thing,’” said Bentley, South Carolina’s running backs coach. “So he’s excited about it, and it’s a lot of fun right now.”
The younger Bentley graduated Opelika (Ala.) High School a year early to enroll at USC, where he’s competing with senior Perry Orth and freshman Brandon McIlwain for the quarterback job. Although Bentley has been third in that running order throughout preseason camp, his dad says the 18-year-old has no regrets over his decision.
