COLUMBIA — Steve Spurrier has seen about everything in football, but the Head Ball Coach can’t remember one of his quarterbacks getting socked in the mouth.
“Don’t think so,” he said after practice Wednesday, when asked about the episode that left New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith with a broken jaw. “But I don’t think I’ve ever had a quarterback that owed somebody money, either. That was a bad scene. Sounds like they’re both at fault.”
Smith was punched in the Jets locker room by a now ex-teammate who allegedly believed the quarterback owed him $600 in travel costs for not attending a youth camp.
