On the Beat: Gamecocks taking no chances with Pharoh Cooper in practice

COLUMBIA — Pharoh Cooper didn’t do much in spring practice, as South Carolina tried to protect its All-SEC wide receiver. The Gamecocks are taking it easy on the all-purpose star in preseason camp as well.

Receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. said Cooper is being limited in areas such as scrimmages, in an attempt to keep him healthy heading into the Sept. 3 opener against North Carolina in Charlotte. Cooper sprained his hand the first week of practice, “but he’s fine,” Spurrier Jr. said.

“We’re coaching him. He’s working hard and wants to get better. He wants to be a better player than he was last year,” Spurrier Jr.
