On the Beat: Ex-Gamecock Green needed to ‘start afresh,’ Spurrier says

COLUMBIA — As far as Steve Spurrier was concerned, Wesley Green simply needed a new start.

“It was just best that he start afresh somewhere else,” Spurrier said Tuesday, referring to the redshirt freshman cornerback who is no longer with the team. “We wish him the very best.”

Spurrier announced Monday that Green had parted ways with the program. According to Richland County Judicial Court records, the native of Lithonia, Ga., had been cited March 22 in Columbia for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana, and paid $620 in fines and submitted to random drug testing.
