COLUMBIA — It’s one thing for the two SEC East programs to meet on the field, as they do every season. But could South Carolina and Georgia actually be competing for the same prospective head coach?
That certainly appears a possibility, given that the Gamecocks and Bulldogs have each been connected to Kirby Smart, defensive coordinator at No. 2 Alabama, which plays No. 18 Florida on Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. USC is searching for a successor to Steve Spurrier, who resigned Oct. 13, while Georgia is looking to replace Mark Richt, who was fired Sunday.
With Tom Herman apparently on the brink of signing a new contract to remain at Houston, indications are that Smart is the top candidate of USC athletic director Ray Tanner.
