Neck injury forces Gamecocks’ Tucker to quit football

A medical issue means that South Carolina freshman tight end Robert Tucker III will have to end his football career. Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp made the announcement Tuesday afternoon during his weekly press conference.

Muschamp told reporters that Tucker had a “hereditary issue” with his neck that would force him to give up the game.

“He had some numbness in camp a couple times and had some reoccurring issues with his neck,” Muschamp said. “We met with a spinal specialist yesterday and we feel like he needs to shut down football.”

Muschamp said Tucker would remain at South Carolina to continue his education and pursue a long-term career in athletic administration.
