NCAA snubs lead SEC to hire former Big East commissioner as basketball advisor

COLUMBIA — NCAA Tournament snubs like the one which befell South Carolina this season have led the SEC to add a new advisor the league hopes will boost its flagging reputation in men’s basketball.

Mike Tranghese, who helped build the original Big East into a powerhouse league in the 1980s, has been added as the SEC’s new special advisor for men’s basketball, and will work with commissioner Greg Sankey to try and enhance the overall quality of the sport.

South Carolina was left out of the NCAAs this season despite a 24-8 record and a third-place finish in the SEC.
