COLUMBIA — The first endowed scholarship awarded in the name of former South Carolina women’s basketball star Aleighsa Welch will go to the Gamecocks’ best player.
USC announced Thursday that two-time SEC Player of the Year Tiffany Mitchell would become the first recipient of the fully-endowed scholarship named for Welch, a Goose Creek native and three-year captain who finished her career last season in the Gamecocks’ first Final Four.
The scholarship was funded by Morris and Sheila Cregger, Columbia business owners and USC supporters who aimed to honor Welch’s work ethic and leadership. Mitchell, a senior, has been South Carolina’s leading scorer in each of the past two seasons.
