Hurst was drafted in the 17th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pirates on the strength of a right pitching arm that returned from Tommy John surgery in the eighth grade strong enough to be throwing in the lows 90s by the time he was a high school star for The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla.
