In the past 25 years, not many SEC teams have hired a head coach from within the ranks.
Tennessee promoted Phillip Fulmer from his offensive coordinator post and he had a Hall of Fame career. Others weren’t so fortunate. Georgia promoted Ray Goff to succeed Vince Dooley. Goff won more than six games in just two of seven seasons. Vanderbilt did the same with Robbie Caldwell, who replaced Bobby Johnson. After one season, Caldwell was fired. Alabama handed the keys to Mike Dubose in 1997. He was fired after the 2000 season. Mike Archer was fired after four seasons at LSU.
