COLUMBIA — The 2017 SEC women’s basketball tournament is coming to the Palmetto State, giving South Carolina a chance to carry its passionate fan following up Interstate 26 and into the postseason.
The SEC confirmed Monday that next season’s tournament will be held at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville. The removal of the Confederate flag from the statehouse grounds, and the end of the NCAA ban on bid-based championships that had accompanied it, allowed the event to return to South Carolina for the first time since 2005.
“I am hopeful this will open the door for future SEC championship events to be held in the state of South Carolina,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said.
