Gamecocks' new assistant coach Lance Thompson moves closer to Citadel roots

COLUMBIA — To Lance Thompson, the four best things about the Palmetto State are a Lowcountry boil, the Carolina Cup steeplechase, beach music, and South Carolina football.

“Maybe not in that order,” he said with a grin.

He may have spent much of his professional life elsewhere, but South Carolina has always called to Thompson — never more than when Will Muschamp became the Gamecocks’ new head football coach and hired Thompson as a top defensive assistant.
