COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s season-opening win streak has grown so long, it now stretches all the way back to the days of Frank McGuire, and the era when the Gamecocks ruled the ACC.
Freshman guard P.J. Dozier scored a career-high 16, and the Gamecocks matched their best start of the modern era in Tuesday night’s 79-54 victory over Drexel at Colonial Life Arena. USC improved to 9-0, tying the start recorded by the 1970-71 squad, which won the program’s lone ACC championship.
Sindarius Thornwell added 13 for South Carolina, which fell five votes shy of breaking into this week’s AP Top 25, and remains the only Division I school with unbeaten men’s and women’s teams.
