Freshman QB Lorenzo Nunez "had to win the game" for Gamecocks

COLUMBIA — Steve Spurrier didn’t think Lorenzo Nunez would have to win the game. He wanted South Carolina’s first true freshman starting quarterback in 16 seasons to manage the contest against Central Florida, take care of the football, and let everything else unfold from there.

After watching a replay of the Gamecocks’ 31-14 victory, he realized he was wrong. “He had to win the game for us,” Spurrier said Sunday. “He accounted for 220 of our 400 yards of offense, and watching the tape of the game, the young man played very well.
