COLUMBIA — Cam Jackson started it. Tyler Renew finished it. And in between, The Citadel engineered another stunning upset of South Carolina.
Jackson set the tone with a 59-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs’ second play from scrimmage, and Renew’s 56-yard rumble with 6:07 remaining proved the backbreaker as the Bulldogs added to their best season in two decades with a 23-22 victory Saturday over the Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The Bulldogs’ victory came 25 years after The Citadel’s 1990 team famously stunned USC 38-35. South Carolina (3-8) had won 10 straight games over Football Championship Subdivision opponents since that upset, and became the first SEC team to lose to an FCS opponent since Ole Miss was upended by Jacksonville State 2010.
