PENSACOLA, Fla. – Six members of the University of South Alabama women's tennis team reached the semifinals in singles on day one of the UWF Fall Fling hosted by West Florida.
Juniors Yu Fujioka and Nikola Kohoutova, and senior Leslie Soto advanced in Flight 1, and junior Cami Moreno, sophomore Yurie Takanishi and freshman Juliette Talieu reached the semis in Flight 2. Three teams reached the semifinals in doubles as well.
DOUBLES
- Fujioka and Kohoutova defeated a team from Mobile 6-1 after receiving a bye in the first round
- Pasanen and Soto, and Takanishi and Moreno also received a bye and won their matches 6-3 against West Florida and Spring Hill, respectively
SINGLES
- Fujioka and Kohoutova each received a bye in the first round in Flight 1
- Fujioka downed Heather Mixon 6-3, 6-3, and Kohoutova won 6-4, 6-2
- Pasanen topped Mary Grace Sullivan of Spring Hill 6-2, 6-2, but lost 6-4, 6-3 to Irene Recuenco of West Florida
- Soto dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 first-round victory, then outlasted West Florida's Gabriela Araujo 7-5, 6-7, (10-6)
- In Flight 2, Takanishi won both of her matches in straight sets; she defeated Madelynn Chavez of Loyola-New Orleans 6-2, 7-5, then won 6-4, 6-4
- Talieu advanced via bye before dispatching Sabrina Goetzen of William Carey 6-4, 6-4
- Moreno reached the semis on the strength of two straight-sets victories; she won 6-1, 7-5 in the first round, then got past Fatima Vazquez of Loyola 6-3, 6-3
