As had been foreshadowed for several weeks, the Mobile City Council on Tuesday rejected a proposal to contribute $10 million over 20 years to South Alabama's on-campus stadium project.
The city council voted down the resolution by a 4-3 vote, with a five "yes" votes needed for passage. The efforts of South Alabama officials -- spearheaded by Mobile mayor Sandy Stimpson -- ultimately came up two votes short of their goal.
The Mobile County Commission, which had been waiting on the council to act before taking its own vote, next meets on Monday. The 3-person county commission was believed to be considering contributing $2.
