South Alabama rode solid starting pitching from Jared Proctor and home runs by Brendan Donovan, Michael Sandle and Travis Swaggerty to a 9-6 victory over Arkansas State on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak.
With the victory, the Jaguars avoided what would have been a disastrous three-game sweep against the last-place Red Wolves. With three weeks left in the regular season, USA is 25-17 overall and 13-7 in Sun Belt Conference play, good for second place in the East Division, a half-game ahead of Troy.
"We needed to win after losing the first two games (of the series)," South Alabama coach Mark Calvi said.
