NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama right-handers Miles Smith and Jackson Boyd combined to shut out New Orleans 5-0 Wednesday at Maestri Field.
Smith struck out two and allowed two hits in a career-high 5 1/3 innings pitched without factoring in the decision. Boyd (1-0) struck out a career-high eight batters in a career-high 3 2/3 relief innings to record his first career win at South Alabama.
USA (5-3) broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the eighth, and added an insurance run in the ninth to close out the game's scoring.
