When the NFL concluded its preseason schedule on Thursday night, 171 players with Alabama football roots were on the active rosters of the league's 32 teams. By Saturday night, 59 of those players from state high schools and colleges had been released or waived.
NFL teams had until 3 p.m. CDT Saturday to reduce their 90-player offseason rosters to the regular-season limit of 53. The NFL will kick off its 2017 season on Thursday night, when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
The released players included 28 rookies who were trying to make an NFL roster for the first time.
