Women's World Cup: Versatile Lloyd stepping up when it matters most

Playing two new positions, the veteran scored for the third straight game as the U.S. advanced to the World Cup final with a 2-0 win against Germany.

MONTREAL — Carli Lloyd was frustrated. Of course she was. Three games had passed at the Women's World Cup and the U.S. national team attack was out of sorts. Saddled with a two-way midfield role, the veteran wasn't at her influential best.

So Lloyd sat down with U.S. coach Jill Ellis after the group stage and voiced her concerns.

"She was like, 'Don't stress it — we're going to find a way to get you going,'" Lloyd recalled.
