Women's World Cup: U.S. looks to end 16-year drought in Japan rematch

The U.S. national team can win its first World Cup since 1999 with victory over Japan, which denied the Americans four years ago in Germany.

VANCOUVER — It's not revenge. It's not redemption. To Carli Lloyd, the Women's World Cup final is all about putting a third star on the United States jersey.

The match coming against the same Japan program that defeated the Americans four years ago is, in her mind, coincidental.

"It's a new World Cup, it's a different team than four years prior, it's a different situation," Lloyd said. "It's just another World Cup final match that happens to be against Japan.
