Women's World Cup Review: England, Japan reach semifinals

England broke new ground at the Women's World Cup on Saturday, as the Three Lionesses and Japan joined United States and Germany in the last four.

England qualified for the Women's World Cup semifinals for the first time, dumping host Canada from the tournament, while reigning champion Japan also progressed.

An early blitz from the English put away Canada, which dominated the latter stages of the second half but was unable to find an equalizer as it lost 2-1.

England had fallen at the quarterfinal stage of the past two World Cups, going out on penalties four years ago against France, while it was thumped 3-0 by the United States in 2007.
