Women's World Cup: 'Dominant' Schmidt leads Canada to send-off victory over England

Midfielder Sophie Schmidt dazzled the home crowd as Canada defeated England 1-0 on Friday.

HAMILTON, Ont. — The crowd in Hamilton came to see Christine Sinclair, but it was treated to a special performance by Sophie Schmidt.

The 26-year-old midfielder from Abbotsford, B.C., put on a performance that her coach called "dominant" as she led Canada to a 1-0 victory over England in both teams' final tune-up match before the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, which kicks off in just over a week's time.

In the continued absence of the injured Diana Matheson, Schmidt played a more advanced role against the English than fans had become accustomed to over the years, and it was her first-half strike that decided the match.
