In an interview with German weekly paper Die Zeit in 2012, Jürgen Klopp was asked if there were any hopes he had given up on. His answer: "I never had a crazy amount of hopes. Men are like that, I believe. We have a pragmatic approach to life. We deal with what's in front of us."
Not worrying about the big picture can be a useful approach. Klopp's endlessly repeated mantra doing his three most successful seasons at Dortmund (two championships, one DFB Cup, runners-up in the Champions League from 2011 to 2013) was "thinking from match to match," taking each game as it came along.
