Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 FC Edmonton: ‘Caps earn late draw with plucky Eddies

NASL side FC Edmonton came close to earning an upset at BC Place, but Gershon Koffie’s late equalizer leaves the Canadian Championship semifinal series in the balance.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC and FC Edmonton played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal series Wednesday night.

Tomi Ameobi gave Edmonton a surprise early lead from a Gershon Koffie mistake, but the Ghanaian midfielder made up for his error by equalizing for Vancouver in the dying stages.

The NASL outfit stunned the BC Place crowd just four minutes into the match. Ameobi dispossessed Koffie near the edge of the Whitecaps box before strolling in and slotting a fine finish past ‘Caps goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi to give the Eddies a valuable away goal.
