U.S. happy to advance after tough Nigeria clash

Though not a spectacular performance, the Americans were pleased with a one-goal win over Nigeria which saw them top Group D at the Women’s World Cup

VANCOUVER — It was not pretty, nor spectacular. But for the overwhelmingly pro-American crowd at BC Place, all that mattered was a United States victory in Tuesday’s Group D finale at the Women’s World Cup.

Stars and Stripes captain Abby Wambach delivered what the majority of the 52,193 spectators wanted to see – a winning goal just before halftime to secure the Americans a 1-0 win over a spirited Nigeria side on Canada’s west coast.
