This week saw the final round of games in the Champions League group stage take place. Of the 16 fixtures, only five had any impact on qualification for the knockout round. In five of the eight groups, the top two were already decided.
Manchester City and Barcelona's group was completely dead, with none of the four clubs able to move up or down. Fifteen of the 16 top-two seeds qualified, the exception being Monaco, who took advantage of CSKA Moscow's winless campaign.
Arguably the biggest surprise in the whole first round, of 96 games between the supposed elite of European football, was that Borussia Dortmund finished ahead of Real Madrid in their group.
