In the four years of the Hudson River Derby, the often-chippy Major League Soccer rivalry between the Red Bulls and New York City F.C., a few themes have emerged.
The Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips scores a lot. N.Y.C.F.C.’s David Villa does his best to match him. And then the rivalry fades, the postseason arrives, and both sides wind up disappointed.
This year, though, there is a feeling that the ending might be a little different.
Oh, the teams still played the classics on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium: Wright-Phillips scored again, Villa answered again and two players were sent off as the teams played a 1-1 tie.
