Aside from shock winners Denmark and Greece, perhaps the best surprise story in recent European Championship tournaments was the Czech Republic in 1996. A team that featured a slew of talent that would later be distributed around Europe, from Vladmir Smicer to Patrick Berger, Pavel Nedved to Karel Poborsky, the Czechs scraped through a tough group, knocking out Italy and Russia, before beating Portugal 1-0 in the quarterfinal, then France on penalties in the semi.
