Steve Cherundolo joins Hannover coaching staff

MUNICH (AP) -- Former American national team defender Steve Cherundolo has joined the coaching staff of relegation-threatened Hannover.

Cherundolo will be an assistant to newly-appointed head coach Michael Frontzek, who was hired to save the team from relegation in the last five matches of the Bundesliga season. Cherundolo was appointed Hannover's had coached the club's under-15 team since retiring just over a year ago following a 16-year playing career in Hannover. He was appointed the club's captain before the 2010-11 season.

Frontzek replaced Tayfun Korkut on Monday. Korkut was fired after 13 winless matches. Hannover is now only one place and two points above Paderborn, which currently occupies the relegation playoff place.
