Sports Briefing | Soccer: Not Guilty Plea Entered in FIFA Case

The former president of Honduras and a former FIFA vice president extradited from Switzerland on Tuesday pleaded not guilty in federal court in Brooklyn to charges stemming from the sprawling investigation of bribes and kickbacks involving soccer’s governing body.

Rafael Callejas, the president of Honduras from 1990 to 1994, pleaded not guilty to bribery charges. He is a current member of FIFA’s television and marketing committee. Juan Ángel Napout, the former FIFA vice president, pleaded not guilty to racketeering, conspiracy and wire fraud.

The authorities announced that two other indicted soccer officials — Nicolas Leoz, the former head of the South American football confederation, and Eduardo Li, the former head of the Costa Rican soccer federation — would be extradited to the United States.
