SAO PAULO (AP) -- A Palmeiras fan has died from head injuries after being attacked by Santos supporters following the teams' match in the final of the Sao Paulo state championship at the weekend.
Authorities said Wednesday the 25-year-old fan was not able to recover from the injuries sustained after Palmeiras defeated Santos 1-0 in the first leg of the final on Sunday.
Claudio Morais, a member of one of Palmeiras' biggest fan groups, had been hospitalized in an intensive care unit.
He was with a group of friends and his girlfriend when he was attacked after the match at Palmeiras' Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo.
