Sigi Schmid, Record-Setting Soccer Coach, Is Dead at 65

Sigi Schmid, the winningest coach in Major League Soccer history, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 65.

Schmid’s family said he died at Ronald Reagan U.C.L.A. Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized three weeks ago as he awaited a heart transplant.

Schmid had a league-record 266 regular-season and postseason victories in 18 seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Columbus Crew and the Seattle Sounders. He led his teams to two M.
