Roundup: Red Bulls Knocked Out of U.S. Open Cup in Penalty Kicks

Lloyd Sam tied the game at 1-1 four minutes into second-half stoppage time on Tuesday, but the Red Bulls nonetheless went on to lose, 4-3, in penalty kicks to the visiting Philadelphia Union in the United States Open Cup quarterfinals.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, the Red Bulls’ leader in M.L.S. goals this season with eight, missed the hosts’ first spot kick. Sam later had his attempt saved, while the Union converted four of their five.

Philadelphia’s Eric Ayuk Mbu opened the scoring at Red Bull Arena in the 56th minute of regulation.

A STRONG START FOR STERLING Raheem Sterling, the most expensive English soccer player in history, wasted no time in paying off for Manchester City, scoring just 2 minutes 17 seconds into his debut in a friendly win over Roma at the International Champions Cup in Melbourne.
