Pumas will start their Copa MX campaign with an away trip to Tampico, as they face Tampico Madero. Pumas will be coming off a better than normal Copa MX campaign, in which they went into the Quarterfinals but lost to eventual champion Necaxa. The loss at home was especially bad because they were at home and Necaxa went down a man but still managed to come out with the win. This tournament comes as a new opportunity for the Universitarios against a Tampico Madero team that will be missing their best player, Eduardo Aguirre, because of the Central Americana and Caribbean games.
