Philadelphia Union release former USMNT veterans Edu and Onyewu

Maurice Edu’s time with the Philadelphia Union looks set to come to an end.

The former U.S. national team defender-midfielder was among nine players who did not have their contract options with the team picked up for the 2018 season, the club announced Wednesday.

That lists includes Edu’s former international teammates Oguchi Onyewu and Charlie Davies, along with Giliano Wijnaldum, brother of Liverpool midfielder Georginio.

Also on that list are Aaron Jones, Ken Tribbett, Roland Alberg, Fabian Herbers and Ilsinho as the Union appear set for a roster shake-up following a disappointing 2017 that saw them miss the MLS playoffs.
