The MLS standings, and the area’s soccer pecking order, were both transformed a bit Sunday when New York City FC crafted a convincing 2-0 victory over the rival Red Bulls, with a goal and assist from its rookie forward, Jack Harrison.
Considering recent disasters against this same opponent, NYCFC gained considerable self-respect with this reversal. The win also propelled NYCFC into the unaccustomed position of first place in the Eastern Conference. The final score represented a nine-goal turnaround after the 7-0 drubbing from the Red Bulls in May, on this very same field.
“They enjoyed their win possibly a bit too much in the locker room last time,” Frank Lampard said of the Red Bulls.
