A late-season surge likely won't be enough for NYCFC to qualify for the postseason after a last-gasp loss to D.C. United on Friday.
WASHINGTON — The whiteboard in the New York City FC locker room at RFK Stadium was adorned with messages tactical and tactful.
One side featured a breakdown of Friday's opponent, D.C. United. The other was reserved for motivational phrases. "Stay together." "We believe." And so on. But after Alvaro Saborio's stoppage-time winner doomed NYCFC to a 2-1 defeat, forward Patrick Mullins picked up an eraser and wiped those words from the board.
