Name on the trophy? Sevilla sneak through as heroic Hulk suffers heartbreak

The Europa League holders were on the brink of elimination against Zenit, but somehow found a way to progress as their love affair with the tournament continued.

Fortune favors the brave? Not in St. Petersburg. Andre Villas-Boas’ Zenit side crashed out of the Europa League in cruel fashion Thursday to a Sevilla side which may just have its name on the trophy once again.

In last season’s victory over Benfica in the final, Sevilla goalkeeper Beto saved penalties from Oscar Cardozo and Rodrigo in the shootout, before Kevin Gameiro smashed in the winning kick.

Gameiro enjoyed another tremendous moment in the competition by coming off the bench to replace the excellent Carlos Bacca, making it 2-2 on the night (and 4-3 on aggregate) with a decisive late finish.
